My work with teams is practical and pragmatic. I have a number of tools at my disposal, drawing on the latest thinking and practice and tailoring my approach to take into account your business drivers and needs.
WHAT MAKES A GREAT TEAM STAND OUT?
I believe that the best performing teams are clear about their Purpose and Vision, develop the right balance of Support and Challenge, and consciously and intentionally make use of each person’s unique strengths. They monitor hard targets as well as the ‘soft’ side such as behaviour and relationships. They celebrate success, they build great stakeholder relationships outside the team, always scanning their environment and changing and flexing accordingly.
LEADERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Leadership teams have a particular challenge. They are constantly ‘in the spotlight’. Every word or action sends a message to the wider organisation about both the individual leader and the team. At their best, they are trusted role models of the organisation’s culture and values. At their worst they are disjointed, inconsistent and mistrusted. Working with me, you will consider the ‘shadow’ that your leadership team casts on the wider organisation and what tone it sets.
HOW I WORK WITH YOU
I start by speaking to the team leader/sponsor to gain their perspective on the team, understand the key business imperatives and agree the overall approach.
Typically I will then speak to some or all of the team to build a picture of what works and what doesn’t work, presenting a summary back to the team leader/sponsor.
The overall approach consists of one or more workshops, using appropriate frameworks and models to address the issues at play. The intent behind the design is always to generate high quality conversations between team members, not shying away from the ‘tough stuff’ that is so often swept under the carpet.
Workshops may be supplemented with one-to-one coaching to enable individuals to work on very specific individual leadership issues that impact the team.
WORKING WITH LEADERSHIP GROUPS
I can also support groups of leaders from across functions and teams. This can be particularly useful to increase networking and collaboration where silos exist. Building trust across functional areas can support innovation, speed and flexibility.
WHAT OUTCOMES DO WE ACHIEVE?
Every team is different, but here are some examples of the outcomes that I have helped leadership teams to achieve:
Defining a strong Vision and Purpose for the team.
Defining a ‘leadership shadow’ consistent with the desired Culture and Values and achieving leadership behaviours consistent with this.
Increasing collaboration and use of individual and team strengths to deliver team targets.
